Get a Guitar Tuner: Perhaps the simplest step in the process, the tuner serves two functions in how to play guitar. The obvious one is that it will tune your guitar so that the sound you make is better and more listenable, especially to those within earshot. But more importantly, it will help teach you which string combinations correspond to the right notes. Tuners are relatively inexpensive and can help act as a jump start to how to play guitar.
Read Guitar Tabs: There is a standard for music notation with guitars that is called “guitar tabs”. Basically, you look at the tab in the same manner that you look at your guitar. Each line represents a string and each number notation represents which fret to hold when plucking or strumming the string. In this manner, you will learn the proper placement of your fingers to replicate the notes.
Correct finger placement: While the guitar tabs will indicate the correct placement of your fingers, remember that you are actually pressing down between the metal strips that run vertically down the tab, not on them. The first fret is located between the first and second metal band, so place your fingers accordingly. Also, you are playing with your fingertips, not the soft part of your finger so keep your nails filed down accordingly.
Strum Correctly: This is perhaps the most difficult part of how to play guitar without having some hands-on instruction. You need to keep track of the beat and strum when appropriate. Keep the pressure steady on all the strings and be sure to sweep evenly across them.
Practice Chords: A chord is a group of notes that sound really good together, there are five major chords C,A,G,E & D. Be sure to practice them until you can move comfortably without losing your rhythm and having to stop.
Learn Some Songs: Now that you have gotten the basics down, start by learning some simple songs until you gain more confidence. Before you know it, you will have learned how to play guitar effectively and enjoyably as well.
